Teens, celebrate responsibly

Wednesday, Apr. 11, 2012

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office cares about teen drivers and it is committed to keeping them safe.

With prom season here and graduations quickly approaching, it’s time to remind our young drivers about the importance of making good choices when it comes to celebrating these wonderful events.

Overall, most of our teens are making good decisions and staying away from celebrations that could lead to impaired driving. In fact, we have been fortunate here in Charles County in that we have not had any recent alcohol- or drug-related fatalities as a result of prom and graduation activities.

But now is not the time to let our guard down. As a community, we need to continue our efforts to do everything possible to prevent such tragedies from occurring. That’s why I’m taking this opportunity to remind our merchants, hotels, vendors, restaurants, bars, night clubs, parents and students that it is against the law for anyone younger than 21 to consume alcohol.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has zero tolerance regarding impaired driving. During this season, we will have ongoing saturation patrols and we will be looking for impaired drivers. And, we will respond to any reports of parties where underage drinking is reported.

We strongly encourage teens to celebrate responsibly. As graduations draw near, consider attending Project Graduation a celebration event held locally where graduates can experience a safe, alcohol-free gathering. More information about this program is available at www.ccso.us.

Please, take a minute to remind your teen drivers that life can change forever the second they operate a vehicle recklessly. Let’s work together to keep our children safe. We can make a difference.

Police Cars Take On A New Look - Coming Soon To Charles County

Say goodbye to the Ford Crown Victoria police car.  2011 was the last production year for the Crown Vic.  2012 brings a whole new look for the future of police cars.

New Ford Police Interceptor to get 25% better mileage than Crown Vic

On Tuesday, February 7, 2012 the Charles County Board of County Commissioners approved the request of Sheriff Rex Coffey to use a one time funding source to purchase 45 new police cars.  Due to the economic times, the Sheriff's Office has gone several years without purchasing replacement police cars for the aging fleet.  "This will help us get through the next year or so" said Sheriff Coffey, who also expressed his appreciation for the support of the Commissioners.

Though CCSO police cruisers will have a slightly different cosmetic scheme than the photo below, you can get an idea of what you will be seeing in Charles County in the near future.
